The recent 40th anniversary of Title IX was a good reminder of how far women’s athletics has come – and so is a look at the change in uniforms.
Last week, we started The Uniform Project with one of Muhlenberg’s oldest men’s sports, track and field. Today, we look at one of the oldest women’s sports, field hockey, which made its debut in 1959 shortly after the College went coeducational.
Those early Mule teams were known for their incredible success, going 54-2-4 in their first nine seasons. During that time they wore the classic tunics, but in the early 1970s they switched to collared shirts and kilts.
Women’s lacrosse became a varsity sport in Muhlenberg in 1984, and for many of the years since, lacrosse and field hockey have shared the uniforms pictured below.
Our next project will be on Thursday, July 12. What team should we do? Let us know!
